About A different type of HBO - Doctor receives hyperbaric oxygen therapy
IU Health's comprehensive wound care team uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO therapy) to treat non-healing wounds. HBO therapy delivers 100% pure oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure in a clear acrylic, mono-place chamber. This therapy accelerates the wound healing process, increases oxygenation to all tissues, promotes collagen and new skin development, reduces swelling and discomfort, promotes new blood vessel formation, and activates bactericidal activity killing bacteria. The IU Health Wound Care team consists of clinicians from various disciplines including nurses, physical therapists, certified wound specialists, wound, ostomy and continence nurses, diabetic educators and physicians of multiple specialties. They carefully assess each patient's condition using tools such as laboratory testing and vascular diagnostics to assess blood flow. IU Health's HBO treatment is available at multiple locations. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers work by surrounding the patient with 100% oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure in sessions that last 90 minutes to two hours. This increases the amount of oxygen in the patient's blood, allowing red blood cells to pass more easily through the plasma into the wounds to heal them from the inside out. Patients can listen to music or watch movies on televisions while remaining in constant contact with those outside the chamber through an intercom.
