The Department of Hyperbaric Medicine at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center, established in 1974, is an internationally recognized facility offering hyperbaric oxygen treatments to adults and children in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. They operate seven days a week, with emergency care available 24 hours a day. The facility features six monoplace hyperbaric oxygen chambers, including larger models that allow patients to sit during treatment. The clear plastic construction of the chambers allows patients to interact with family and friends or watch TV during their sessions. The clinic is part of MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center's Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Oxygen Center, which provides comprehensive care for chronic and non-healing wounds. A multidisciplinary team develops individualized treatment plans for each patient. The program boasts high healing rates, with over 96% of patients typically healed within 14 weeks. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100% oxygen at increased pressure, which helps improve healing time, stimulate new blood vessel growth, enhance white blood cell efficiency, and reduce swelling. It is used to treat various conditions, including non-healing wounds, diabetic ulcers, chronic bone infections, and tissue damage from radiation therapy. The clinic also participates in a Limb Preservation Program for patients at high risk of amputation. Dr. Stuart S. Miller, a board-certified emergency medicine physician, serves as the Medical Director of Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine at Long Beach Medical Center.
