About Duke Health

The Duke Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology is a regional referral center in the Southeast for hyperbaric medicine. It is a multi-place, critical care-oriented facility that operates 24 hours a day. Duke's hyperbaric facility was the first in the nation and remains the largest hyperbaric chamber in the country. All physicians are board-certified in hyperbaric medicine. Duke Dive Medicine operates a 24-hour physician consultation hotline and offers medical evaluations for individuals participating in adventure sports. The clinic provides hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat a variety of conditions, including wounds, infections, scuba diving and altitude injuries, and smoke inhalation. They also specialize in the physiology of extreme exposure and can simulate lower-oxygen environments in their hyperbaric chamber for individuals preparing to travel to higher altitudes or fly in an aircraft. The center is involved in ongoing research to examine the effects of hyperbaric oxygen on various conditions. Duke Hyperbaric Medicine Clinic is the only hyperbaric facility in North Carolina accredited by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and the first hyperbaric center in North America to receive UHMS accreditation “With Distinction”. It is also the only civilian hyperbaric facility in the United States that carries the US Navy Certification. The center serves as a backup facility for the treatment of diving injuries for the United States Armed Forces, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and local police, fire, and rescue agencies.
