This distinction is awarded to only a select few centers nationwide, and Essentia Health-Fargo is the only one in the region that offers 24/7 emergency hyperbaric care. The department has a certified team committed to providing personalized healthcare, with providers specially trained in undersea and hyperbaric medicine. Essentia Health-Fargo opened its hyperbaric department in 2021 with two chambers and expanded to four chambers in August 2025 to meet growing demand. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood to promote healing in injured or infected areas. Essentia Health uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy in both outpatient and emergency settings to treat FDA-approved conditions. The facility is located in the same building as the Essentia Health-32nd Avenue Clinic, offering convenient access to a full-service hospital and emergency room. Essentia's Hyperbaric Medicine team commonly treats conditions such as delayed radiation injuries, carbon monoxide poisoning, hard-to-heal wounds (including diabetic foot ulcers), acute thermal burns, and skin grafts or flaps with poor blood flow. They also treat air or gas embolism, gas gangrene, crush injuries, necrotizing soft tissue infections, mandibular osteoradionecrosis, idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL), avascular necrosis, osteomyelitis, central retinal artery occlusion, intracranial abscess, decompression sickness and severe anemia.
