About Hyperbaric medicine - Phelps Hospital
The Department of Hyperbaric Medicine at Phelps Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, specializes in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO), a treatment for serious infections, air bubbles in blood vessels, and wounds that won't heal due to diabetes or radiation. During HBO therapy, patients breathe 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood and promoting the development of new blood vessels to deliver oxygen to damaged tissues and wounds. This process can speed up healing, activate infection-fighting white blood cells, and improve the effectiveness of antibiotics. Phelps' hyperbaric chamber is the largest in the northeastern U.S., accommodating up to 12 adults and allowing the treatment team to join patients inside. The chamber's double-lock system enables healthcare professionals to enter and exit without interrupting treatment.
