Providence Hyperbaric Medicine, located within the Providence Portland Medical Center, utilizes hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat a variety of conditions. During treatment, patients are placed in a clear acrylic chamber where they breathe 100% oxygen at high pressure. This increases the oxygen levels in the blood, promoting healing, preventing tissue death, and fighting infection. The clinic's approach involves three phases: compression, treatment (approximately 1.5 to 2 hours), and decompression. They treat conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, decompression illness in scuba divers, impaired circulation due to diabetes, trauma, and radiation therapy.
