About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Virtua Health offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) at its wound care centers to promote healing and improve the quality of life for patients. During treatment, patients breathe 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber, which allows for increased oxygen absorption into the bloodstream and delivery to body tissues. This process enhances new tissue growth, improves blood circulation, strengthens the immune system, reduces swelling and pain, and encourages the growth of new skin and collagen cells. HBOT is used to treat conditions such as wounds that haven't healed within 30 days, diabetes-related wounds, bone infections, failed skin grafts, and tissue damage from radiation. During a typical 90-minute session, patients lie comfortably in a large, see-through tube and can watch a movie, listen to music, or sleep. The staff closely monitors patients throughout the therapy. Virtua's HBOT centers work closely with referring physicians to provide comprehensive wound care. Virtua operates multiple wound care centers with hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Mount Holly, Voorhees, and Willingboro, New Jersey. The therapy is considered painless, and most patients report mild to no side effects, though some may experience lightheadedness, sinus pain, or claustrophobia. Virtua's HBOT program aims to provide advanced treatments and personalized care to help patients return to an active life.
