What to Expect

Patients enter a rigid, medical-grade hyperbaric chamber and breathe 100% oxygen at clinical pressures (typically 1.5-3.0 ATA). A standard treatment runs roughly 60-90 minutes including compression and decompression. Most medical protocols call for a multi-session course; the clinical team will outline a treatment plan based on the indication.

Guest Reviews

Patients report feeling calmer during treatments and have noticed improvements in various conditions. Some have experienced increased clarity, reduced agitation, and improved communication. Others have noted positive results in managing their care and overall well-being.

About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The Duke Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology is the Southeast's regional referral center for hyperbaric medicine. It is a multi-place, critical care-oriented facility available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for patients in need of timely care. Duke's board-certified hyperbaric medicine specialists use hyperbaric oxygen therapy -- breathing 100% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure inside a pressurized chamber -- to treat wounds, infections, scuba diving and altitude injuries, smoke inhalation, and a range of other conditions. They operate one of the nation's largest hyperbaric chambers. Duke is the only hyperbaric facility in North Carolina accredited by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society and the only facility in the Mid Atlantic Region staffed with physicians who are all board certified in hyperbaric medicine. The clinic offers medical evaluations to people planning to participate in adventure sports and operates a 24-hour physician consultation hotline through Duke Dive Medicine. They also offer altitude testing, simulating lower-oxygen environments in their hyperbaric chamber for those preparing to travel to higher altitudes or fly in an aircraft. The center also participates in research studies examining the effects of hyperbaric oxygen on the human system. Typical treatment plans involve 2.5-hour sessions, with the number of treatments varying from 20 to 60 depending on the patient's condition and needs. A board-certified hyperbaric medicine specialist is onsite during each treatment to ensure consistent monitoring and expert attention. On-site clinical staff include MD. FDA-cleared indications listed by the clinic include Wounds, Infections, Scuba diving injuries, Air or gas embolism, Decompression illness, Carbon monoxide poisoning. The clinic also lists off-label or wellness uses such as Altitude injuries, Smoke inhalation, Stroke, Emergency HBOT, Diving Medicine. Services offered at the facility include Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Hard-Shell Medical HBOT (100% O2). Payment options include: Insurance accepted (for covered indications). Treatment is scheduled by appointment; the clinic is not a walk-in facility. Typical operating hours run 8am-4:00pm on weekdays (confirm with the clinic for current schedule).
